In between April and November Destin, FL activities involve another kind of visitor. Sea turtles use the Emerald Coast to nest and it’s highly important to leave them alone when you come across them.
Female turtles come to the shore to create nests for the hatchlings. You may observe the turtles from a distance but do not crowd around the nests or disturb turtles that are making their way to or from the water.
Sea turtles everywhere are protected by the federal government under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and under Florida state law. It is an illegal act to disturb the nests of sea turtles, harass, harm, trap, or kill them. Violators may be subjected to a civil penalty of up to $25,000, a criminal penalty of up to $100,000, and up to a year of imprisonment.
